Description

History

Wanlock head,Scotlands "highest Village" at 1531 feet, is an early lead Mining village located in the Lowther Hills. It is situated on the " Southern Upland Way".


Notes

Has an 19th century beam engine. You can pan for gold in various burns and streams.The gold, 22 carats,was used to make the Scottish Crown.
Wanlockhead was known for Mining and processing of lead ores. Though Zinc and gold was also extracted. Commercial mining started in approx 1710 and finished in the 1950s, though mining for lead and silver can be traced back to the Romans.
