probably best known for the air disaster in December 1980.When a main piece of fuselage crashed into the town killing 259 passengers and crew and 11 people on the ground.
The Garden of rembrance for this disaster is situated on the edge of the town beside the the road to Lochmaben. The Hallimure Pow chapel (1942), furnished with hand-carved statues & furnishings is also worth a visit.
Notes
The Hallimure POW chapel is situated just outside Lockerbie. Ukrainian prisoners of war were sent here from Italy rather than being handed over to the Russians
